What is SCARA robot and what are its characteristics

Introduction: With the increasingly prominent performance of industrial robots, including SCARA robots, rectangular coordinate robots and multi joint robots, the manufacturing industry has increasingly applied these industrial robots. They are designed in a unique way that allows them to perform specific tasks that other devices may not be able to accomplish.

Industrial robot is a kind of mechanical equipment that can be programmed repeatedly, and can move and perform tasks. It often appears in the manufacturing process of performing automated tasks, such as parts assembly, welding and palletizing. If you have seen the video of automobile assembly, you may have seen several examples of industrial robots performing tasks, such as an industrial robot moving the frame from one station to another, another installing the door on the body, and the third spraying black paint back and forth on the body.

Industrial robots have existed for nearly 70 years. However, few people know these types of industrial robots, which are entering all walks of life at a fast speed.

1. What is SCARA robot?

SCARA robot, translated from Chinese, is a horizontal multi joint robot, also known as a selective compliance manipulator. They have been used in industrial assembly lines since 1981. They were previously called selective compliant assembly robotic arms, and now they are also called selective compliant assembly robotic arms, because they can also be used for other tasks that do not involve assembly.

Their structure is relatively simple, with two link arms connected together, and their design is similar to the human arm. Some of these industrial robots have three axes, that is, three joints, but the standard robot has four axes, which can translate along the x axis, y axis, and z axis, or rotate 360 degrees around the z axis.

Because of its mechanical structure, it has specific applications. Compared with multi joint robot, this kind of industrial robot has a special shape. This means that these industrial robots are not suitable for all applications, but they will be a good choice for the types of applications they target. At first, it was developed for automatic assembly, but later it can also be used for material handling, welding, dispensing and other tasks.

2. Characteristics of SCARA robot

(1). Good flexibility and rigidity: their movements on the x and y axes are very flexible and have good flexibility, which is also the origin of their name “selective compliance”. Compliance refers to flexibility, but not all axes have good flexibility, such as the z axis, which has good rigidity, usually better than the rigidity of multi joint robots. Therefore, this kind of industrial robot has selectivity.

(2). Fast speed: it is also one of the fast industrial robots in the industry. Compared with other industrial robot types, the cycle time is reduced, and the cycle time can be as low as about 0.3 seconds, even in the long use period.

(3). High precision: In terms of precision, this kind of industrial robot is also highly evaluated among other types of industrial robots. This kind of industrial robots is very accurate, which is one of the reasons why they are very suitable for assembly applications. High accuracy is usually reflected in their limited number of axes. Although they have only four axes, which constrain their range of motion, it also helps them reduce the amount of deviation.

(4). Payload: because this kind of industrial robot is relatively small and is not developed for heavy payload, its payload is usually low and can withstand a load of about 2 kg to 50 kg.

Through the introduction in this article, I believe you have a certain understanding of SCARA robot. Nowadays, SCARA robots can be used in more and more fields. For example, our company has applied SCARA robots to thread rolling machines. In addition to the application on machine tools, it can also be used for various operations such as material handling, welding, dispensing, etc. It has the characteristics of good flexibility and rigidity, fast speed, high accuracy, low payload, etc.
